2012 First Museum Visit of the Year!

On the 14 April (Saturday), as the first musuem visit of the year 2012, Ms Ellen Tay led 12 of our Art Club and H2 Art students down to the ArtScience Museum @ Marina Bay Sands for a fantastic visual treat:

Ms Ellen and the Quirky Art Kids Part 1

Ms Ellen and the Quirky Art Kids Part 2
First up, we had an awesomely enriching time at the Andy Warhol - 15 Minutes Eternal Exhibition. For the first time in many of their lives, our students got to see the legen- .....wait for it......... -DARY artworks of famous Pop Artist Andy Warhol up close! We even got to pose with the legen-.... wait for it..... -DARY Campbell Soup can!

The exhibition features a wide range of Warhol's creations, some of which were lesser known. From his illustrative works for the fashion industry to his highly provocative polaroid shots of celebrities and close friends, to the deadpan imitation of Kelloggs Cereal and vibrant Pop Art animals, our students were not only viewing the works but also learning about the artist from the highly informative curator's comments found on the walls in the exhibition!

From the galleries, students learnt about his influence and technique, and interacted with some of the artworks to understand why, even today, 25 years after his death, was Warhol hailed as one of the greatest artists of the late twentieth century!

Thinking of going home right after that? NO WAY! Because our tickets entitled us a complimentary visit the Titanic - The Artifact Exhibition, also at the ArtScience Museum! WooHOo!!

Part of the 'Things You Get' package when you first enter the exhibition venue. The name on the Boarding Pass belongs to an actual passenger on board Titanic. Towards the end of the exhibition, you get to check if 'you' survived the tragedy.
The exhibition was really cool and history seem to come alive as you examine the real artifacts and stories of actual passengers who were on board the Titanic! ArtScience Museum had reconstructed authentic, notable spaces within the huge passenger liner who sailed to her doom 100 years ago,  and we get to re-live the experience and story behind the terrible tragedy.

This was a truly a beautiful, yet haunting experience and to say the truth, I walked out of the exhibit feeling rather affected, but definitely more informed and fascinated with this enigmatic legend.

Alright! Enough with my personal rantings, may I now invite students who had turned up for the museum trip to type in their comments and feedbacks about the exhibition? Have fun!

Andy Warhol - 15 Minutes Eternal Exhibition will end on 12 August 2012.
Titanic - The Artifact Exhibition will end on 29th April 2012.

JC1 Student's Visit to PLACE the exhibition

PLACE is an exhibition by a class of ex-RJ art students... It's held at this really cool place at 16 Marshall Road (a tad far from the school though...)

PLACE is about the artists' personal interpretation of what the word 'place' means to each of them. Most of them worked and interacted with the exhibition space allocated to them and worked out art pieces that are almost tactile in meaning. Kudos to the team!

Most importantly, Berny, one of the artists took time off to give our students an insightful tour around the space and about the artworks. This really helped our students to gain a feel of what it really means to think, work and eventually become an artist - something that will help them through their coursework days to come... I hope. Anyway... here are some pictures!

Berny was really helpful, kept asking if our students have any questions regarding the coursework processes and SOVA learning...

En Ci, ex-NYJCian was sort of a surprise/guest speaker for that day...

This particular work with book pages suspended from the ceiling is really captivating. I especially liked the little surprises that the artist had hidden in the work!

Wall mural painting CIP at Nee Soon East Kindergarten

What started as a joint CIP project between Art Club and Air Weapons Club saw the Kindergarten teachers pitching in the paint the wall mural. The mural was designed jointly by Art Club students Clara-Ann Chow and Cherie Tan.

YJC students enjoyed the experience and found it especially meaningful because they saw how delighted the kindergarten children were when they saw the finished mural.

Art Guiding CIP at Bishan Park Secondary on 3rd June

Last Thursday, 3rd June, the JC 1 Art Club students went to Bishan Park Secondary School to help facilitate an Arts Festival that the school was hosting. Our task was to bring primary school students from various schools for an Art Walk around the school, explaining to them the different elements of Art and allowing them to explore and search their own meanings and feelings towards Art. For most of us, it was the first time having to play part of a role of a ‘teacher’ carrying out a ‘lesson’. It was a fruitful experience as I had the opportunity to practice public speaking and taking the role to lead a group of students. Prior to that, at the end of the walk, we had the task of completing an artwork with the students. It taught me patience in handling with children, as they can be quite difficult to handle at times. Overall, it was a well planned CIP as many of us enjoyed our time spent with the children, and we felt a sense of satisfaction having the opportunity to share with them our love and interest for Art.

CHANGING LANDSCAPES: Han Sai Por

The Luxe Art Museum (beside The Cathay) is holding a sculptural exhibition showcasing works by one of the greatest living local sculptor - Ms Han Sai Por. And just last Saturday, some of our YJC's art students and teachers went down to the amazing gallery space to view her works. We were also extremely fortunate and honoured to have the artist herself with us, giving us a mini guided tour around the place and into the meaning her works.

Ms Han Sai Por was born in Singapore during the Japanese Occupation. She spent her childhood in the area around Siglap and Changi, on lands covered with luscious and abundant floral and fauna life. Growing up in the turbulent time of changes, Ms Han saw the gradual stripping of land and nature, replaced instead by noisy constructions, tall buildings, busy tarmac roads and even planned gardens.

Like most of her previous works, the exhibited sculptures reflect her personal responses towards the loss of the natural world to the invading effects of human development; the outcomes of that change and also her interest in natural forms.

Changing Landscapes holds a collection of themes from Deforestation, Extinction, Destruction and Transformation. Besides being able to look at and even feel the sculptures, our students were also able to gain an insight into Ms Han's works, craft and also her life as an artist through the sharing and discussion we had with her.

We know that this was a really hard-to-come-by learning experience and hence, YJC Art Club would like to thank Ms Han Sai Por for her inspiring creations and her time spent sharing and interacting with the students. Finally, we would like to thank The Luxe Art Museum for inviting our students to their beautiful and super conducive gallery space for this visit.

If you haven't been to the museum, do drop by and have a look! The space is really conducive and the works impressive. Ms Han's exhibition will be on till 25th April 2010. I've also uploaded more photos of the students' visit to the gallery. So do click on "From the Camera" and check them out!

JC1 SOVA Mini-Test (Open-Book)

TO ALL JC 1 STUDENTS:

Mini-Test 1 for SOVA is on this Thursday, 25th March, during the first part of your respective SOVA classes.

The tested topics range from Feldman's Approach to Impressionism (to be covered on Wednesday). Your notes (both lecture and personal) should provide sufficient help (or at least provide emotional support) for this endeavour.

This will be a short and fun test. Not to mention, a really good help to balance out your DW if you think your essays are gonna be warpy or frumpy.

After the test, please be reminded (once again) that there will be a student presentation on the Post-Impressionists' Study Table which you should have researched and prepared for over the holidays. Have fun!
